Connected devices, hidden risk
Hotels, hospitals, warehouses and offices now run hundreds of connected devices: IP cameras, access control, building sensors and smart TVs. Many ship with weak default passwords and rarely receive updates, which makes them a favourite target for botnets used in large-scale attacks.
What goes wrong
Compromised devices can be used to attack other organisations, spy on internal traffic or serve as a stepping stone into the business network. Because they rarely have security software, infections can go unnoticed for months.
How to secure IoT
Place IoT devices on their own VLAN with no access to office systems. Change every default password and disable services that are not needed. Block IoT devices from reaching the internet unless they truly require it. Keep firmware updated and replace devices that are no longer supported. Use PoE switches with port security to control exactly what can connect.
Built for segmented networks
Navijin PoE and industrial switches make it simple to power cameras and sensors while keeping them in isolated network zones, a design we recommend for every surveillance and smart-building project.
