How to Choose a PoE Switch for IP Cameras: A Practical Buying Guide
A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch sends both data and power to IP cameras over a single network cable, so you do not need a power socket at every camera. Choosing the wrong switch is one of the most common reasons cameras reboot, lose video or go offline. This guide explains the five things to check before you buy.
1. Count your cameras and add room to grow
Choose a switch with more PoE ports than cameras today. A good rule is to keep 20–30% of ports free for future cameras, access points or IP phones. Common sizes are 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 PoE ports.
2. Calculate the PoE power budget
Every switch has a total PoE budget in watts. Add up the maximum power of all cameras and keep at least 20% headroom. Typical values:
| Device | Typical power | PoE standard needed |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor dome / bullet camera | 4–8 W | PoE (802.3af) |
| Camera with IR night vision | 6–12 W | PoE (802.3af) |
| PTZ camera | 15–30 W+ | PoE+ (802.3at) or higher |
| Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 7 access point | 15–25 W | PoE+ (802.3at) |
Example: 16 cameras × 8 W = 128 W. With 20% headroom you need at least about 155 W of PoE budget. Always check the datasheet of each camera for its maximum power.
3. Check the uplink ports
Video from many cameras flows to the NVR or server through the uplink. For more than 8–16 cameras, choose a switch with Gigabit uplinks; for larger systems or long distances, choose SFP or SFP+ fiber uplinks.
4. Managed or unmanaged?
- Unmanaged PoE switch: plug-and-play, lowest cost, ideal for small shops, homes and simple camera systems.
- Managed (Layer 2) PoE switch: VLANs to separate cameras from office traffic, QoS, port monitoring and remote PoE reboot of a frozen camera. Recommended for offices, hotels, schools and any project with more than one system.
- Layer 3 PoE switch: adds routing between VLANs, for larger buildings and campuses.
5. Match the environment and distance
Standard PoE reaches 100 meters. For cameras further away, use long-range PoE switches (up to 250 m) or fiber. For outdoor cabinets, factories and oil and gas sites, choose industrial PoE switches with wide operating temperature and DIN-rail mounting.
