CCTV Network Design: How to Calculate Bandwidth and Storage for IP Cameras
Most CCTV problems that appear after installation, such as choppy video, missing recordings or a full NVR after two weeks, come from the same mistake: the network and storage were not sized for the cameras. This guide shows a simple method you can use before you buy switches and hard drives.
Step 1: Estimate the bitrate of each camera
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec and scene activity. These are typical values for H.265 at 25 fps with normal activity; busy scenes and night-time noise can double them.
| Resolution | H.264 (typical) | H.265 (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 MP (1080p) | 4 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 4 MP | 6–8 Mbps | 3–4 Mbps |
| 5 MP | 8–10 Mbps | 4–5 Mbps |
| 8 MP (4K) | 12–16 Mbps | 6–8 Mbps |
Add about 10% for the sub-stream used for live view on phones and the NVR grid.
Step 2: Size the switch
- Uplink: add up all camera bitrates on the switch and keep the total below 60–70% of the uplink speed. Twenty-four 4 MP H.265 cameras at 4 Mbps = 96 Mbps, comfortable on a 1G uplink. For 48 cameras or 4K cameras, use 10G SFP+ uplinks.
- PoE budget: fixed cameras usually need 5–8 W, cameras with IR or heaters 10–15 W, and PTZ cameras 25–60 W. Add 20–30% headroom. A 16-port switch with a 250 W budget, such as the Navijin GE1610-2SF, comfortably powers 16 fixed cameras.
- Distance: copper Ethernet is limited to 100 m. For longer runs use fiber SFP uplinks or an extended-distance PoE mode.
Step 3: Calculate storage
Use this formula:
Storage (GB) = bitrate (Mbps) × 10.8 × days × number of cameras
One camera streaming 1 Mbps for 24 hours writes about 10.8 GB. Divide by 1,000 to get TB.
| Example | Result |
|---|---|
| 16 × 4 MP cameras, H.265 at 4 Mbps, 24/7, 30 days | 4 × 10.8 GB × 30 × 16 ≈ 20.7 TB |
| Same with motion recording (≈40% of the time) | ≈ 8.3 TB |
| 32 × 2 MP cameras, H.265 at 2 Mbps, 24/7, 30 days | 2 × 10.8 GB × 30 × 32 ≈ 20.7 TB |
Always add 10–15% free space, and use RAID or a redundant NVR for sites where recordings are evidence.
Step 4: Separate the CCTV network
- Put cameras in their own VLAN and block internet access from that VLAN.
- Change default passwords and disable unused services on every camera.
- Use managed switches with port security so an unknown device cannot be plugged into a camera port.
Quick checklist
- Camera count, resolution and codec listed
- Total bitrate per switch below 70% of the uplink
- PoE budget with 20–30% headroom
- Storage sized for the retention period plus 15%
- Cameras on a separate VLAN
