PoE vs PoE+ vs PoE++: 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt Explained
Power over Ethernet comes in several standards with very different power levels. Choosing a switch with the wrong standard means devices that do not start, reboot under load, or run with reduced features. Here is a clear explanation of PoE, PoE+ and PoE++.
PoE standards at a glance
| Standard | Common name | Power at switch port | Power at device | Typical devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IEEE 802.3af | PoE | 15.4 W | 12.95 W | IP phones, basic cameras, sensors |
| IEEE 802.3at | PoE+ | 30 W | 25.5 W | Wi-Fi 6/7 access points, IR cameras, video phones |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 | PoE++ | 60 W | 51 W | PTZ cameras, multi-radio APs, thin clients |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 | PoE++ | 90 W | 71.3 W | Large PTZ with heaters, displays, LED lighting |
Why power at the device is lower
Some power is lost in the cable. The standards guarantee the power available at the device at the maximum cable length of 100 meters, which is why the device value is lower than the switch port value.
Cabling
802.3af and 802.3at use two pairs of the cable; 802.3bt uses all four pairs. Use at least Cat5e cable, and Cat6 or better for high-power PoE++ and long runs, to reduce heat and loss.
Compatibility
PoE is backward compatible: a PoE+ switch port can power a standard PoE device, and a PoE++ port can power PoE and PoE+ devices. A device that needs PoE+ connected to a plain PoE port may not start or may run with limited functions.
How to choose
- List every device and its PoE class or maximum power from the datasheet
- Make sure each port supports the needed standard
- Check that the total PoE budget covers all devices with about 20% headroom
- Plan for future devices such as Wi-Fi 7 access points, which typically need PoE+
Navijin PoE switches
Navijin PoE switches support 802.3af/at on every PoE port, with models for small installations up to 48-port Layer 3 switches, plus industrial and long-range PoE switches. Learn more in our PoE Networking solution or ask our engineers to calculate your PoE budget.
