Fiber vs Copper Uplinks: When to Use SFP, SFP+ and Media Converters
Every network has two kinds of links: access links to users and devices, and uplinks that connect switches to each other. Getting the uplinks right decides whether the network still performs when it grows. Here is how to choose between copper and fiber, and which SFP module to buy.
Copper or fiber?
| Copper (RJ45, Cat6/6A) | Fiber (SFP/SFP+) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum distance | 100 m | 300 m (multimode) to 20 km+ (single-mode) |
| Speed | 1G; 2.5G/5G/10G on Cat6A | 1G, 10G, 25G and above |
| Electrical interference | Sensitive near motors and power cables | Immune |
| Lightning and ground loops between buildings | Risk | No electrical connection |
| Best for | Within one rack or one floor | Between floors, buildings and outdoor cabinets |
Rule of thumb: use fiber for any uplink longer than 90 m, any link between buildings, and any link in industrial or outdoor environments.
1G SFP or 10G SFP+?
- 1G SFP is enough for an access switch with up to about 24 cameras or a small office.
- 10G SFP+ is recommended for access switches serving Wi-Fi 6/7 access points, 48-port switches, server rooms and aggregation links.
- Check that both ends match: an SFP+ port can often accept a 1G SFP, but a 1G SFP port cannot run 10G.
Multimode or single-mode?
- Multimode (MM): lower-cost optics, up to about 300–550 m depending on speed and fiber grade. Good inside one building.
- Single-mode (SM): up to 3 km, 10 km, 20 km and beyond. Good for campuses, oil and gas sites, ports and marinas.
- Match the module to the installed fiber and connector type (LC or SC). Mixing MM modules on SM fiber does not work reliably.
Single-fiber (BiDi) modules
BiDi modules send and receive on one fiber strand using two wavelengths. They save fiber cores but must be installed in matching pairs (for example, one Tx1310/Rx1550 and one Tx1550/Rx1310).
When to use a media converter
If an existing switch has no SFP port, a media converter turns a copper port into fiber. For new projects, a switch with built-in SFP uplinks is cleaner and has fewer failure points.
Checklist before you order
- Distance and fiber type (MM/SM) for every link
- Connector type (LC/SC) and patch-panel compatibility
- Speed at both ends (1G or 10G)
- Matching pairs for BiDi modules
- Spare modules for critical links
Navijin offers 1G and 10G SFP modules in multimode, single-mode and BiDi versions, plus switches with SFP and SFP+ uplinks. Send us your link list and we will match the optics: request a quotation or see our data center and core switching solution.
