Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 7: Which Should You Buy?
Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are often confused. They are different generations with different bands, speeds and costs. This guide compares them side by side and explains which one fits your project today.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Wi-Fi 6 | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 802.11ax | 802.11ax | 802.11be |
| Bands | 2.4 / 5 GHz | 2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz | 2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz |
| Max channel width | 160 MHz | 160 MHz | 320 MHz |
| Modulation | 1024-QAM | 1024-QAM | 4096-QAM |
| Multi-Link Operation | No | No | Yes |
| Max theoretical speed | 9.6 Gbps | 9.6 Gbps | 46 Gbps |
Wi-Fi 6: the proven, cost-effective choice
Wi-Fi 6 introduced OFDMA and better handling of many devices. It is mature, widely supported by phones and laptops, and the most cost-effective choice for offices, shops, schools and most hotels today.
Wi-Fi 6E: Wi-Fi 6 plus the 6 GHz band
Wi-Fi 6E keeps Wi-Fi 6 technology but adds the clean 6 GHz band, with less interference. Its benefit depends on whether the 6 GHz band is allowed in your country and whether your users' devices support it.
Wi-Fi 7: built for high density and the future
Wi-Fi 7 doubles channel width to 320 MHz, uses 4096-QAM and adds Multi-Link Operation, letting devices use several bands at once for higher speed and lower latency. It is ideal for high-density venues, conference halls, premium hotels, campuses and offices planning for the next 5–10 years.
Which one should you choose?
- Small office, shop, school on a budget: Wi-Fi 6
- Busy office or hotel where 6 GHz is available: Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7
- Conference venues, stadiums, premium hotels, new buildings: Wi-Fi 7
- Mixed environments: Wi-Fi 7 in high-density areas, Wi-Fi 6 elsewhere
Remember that Wi-Fi 7 access points need a fast wired network: 2.5G uplink ports and PoE+ switches with multi-gigabit or 10G uplinks.
Navijin Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7
Navijin offers Wi-Fi 6 access points up to 3000 Mbps and Wi-Fi 7 access points such as the NW-AP725-2.5G and NW-OAP739-2.5G with up to 9300 Mbps and 2.5G uplinks. See our Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 solutions or request a quotation.
